Scope of this resource

What is included

StudentDebtLaws.com explains the principal federal legal frameworks affecting postsecondary debt across the debt lifecycle. Its State Law section contains two targeted student debt-specific inventories for servicing and oversight and for transcript access and institutional debt, plus a narrow broader-lending licensing overlay for education-loan origination.

The federal portion is intentionally broad. The state inventories are narrower. The lending-licensing view is not a comprehensive state consumer-finance-law survey; applicability depends on the lender, transaction, borrower, loan amount, pricing, exemptions, and jurisdiction. General state laws involving consumer credit, debt collection, unfair practices, garnishment, privacy, data security, electronic transactions, military protections, credit reporting, taxation, civil procedure, and other subjects can also affect student debt but are not comprehensively catalogued here. These views address enacted or current law, not pending legislation.

Absence from a state inventory does not mean that no state law applies.
